I'd like to confess to being a complete do-do-bird, and I will only share this in case it saves someone else from embarrassment. Do you know where the actual electrode thingy is, in a heart rate monitor, that senses your heart beat? Of course I always thought it was the big thick flat area in the center of the strap. I always thought it was such a dumb design, because that hard thick piece rarely lies flat across any part of one's chest where there's a heartbeat. So I kept twisting the heart rate strap around trying to get that thing positioned on some fleshy part of my body, and it just didn't work. Well, dear reader, you probably knew all along that the sensors are located in the two long flexible parts of the strap (or the fabric part, in some monitors), where it wraps around the front of your ribs to your side, clamped firmly to your skin. So that's why I never got a strong signal!I'm not sure if it's this electrode gel, or simply the discovery of the proper positioning of the strap, but now I am getting a strong signal right off the bat, every time. The gel certainly seems to work well.

I use this for my chest strap heart rate monitor. On an 'everyday' basis, water does the trick to maintain the electrical connection between the strap and my skin, but if it's especially dry out, or there will be a long time between when I put on the strap (and wet it) to the time I want it to function- like at a race, I'll use th Spectra Gel. It works just fine- and even after 26.2 miles, it isn't irritating. It does turn white and needs to be washed off afterwards, but other than that, it works just fine. No problems.
